Summary

Google Cloud is a suite of cloud services hosted on Google's infrastructure. From compute and storage, to data analytics, machine learning, and networking, Google Cloud offers a wide range of services and APIs that can be integrated with any cloud computing project or application, whether personal or corporate.

In this introductory level lab, you'll take your first steps in Google Cloud by practicing hands-on using the Cloud Console —an in-browser UI for accessing and managing Google Cloud services. You will identify the key features of Google Cloud and also learn the intricacies of the Qwiklabs environment. If you're new to cloud computing or looking for general information about Google Cloud and Qwiklabs, you've come to the right place. Continue reading to learn more about the specifics of this lab, and the various aspects of the exercises you'll be doing hands-on.

What you will learn

In this lab, you will:

Study the Qwiklabs platform and identify the key features of the lab environment.

Learn about (and possibly buy) Qwiklabs credits and launch a lab instance.

Learn how to access the Cloud Console with specific credentials.

Study Google Cloud projects and identify common misconceptions about them.

Learn how to use the Google Cloud navigation menu to identify different types of Google Cloud services.

Learn basic roles and use Cloud IAM services to check available actions for specific users.

Learn about library APIs and their main features.

Precondition

This lab is the introductory level and the first lab you should take if you're not familiar with Google Cloud or Qwiklabs. If you have experience using Qwiklabs and the Cloud Console, consider joining one of these labs:

Getting started with Cloud Shell and gcloud

Creating a Virtual Machine

If you decide to follow one of these, end this lab now .

If you have a personal or corporate Google Cloud account or project, sign out of that account. If you stay logged into your personal/company account and run the lab in the same browser, your credentials could be confused, resulting in an accidental logout of the lab.

If you're using a Pixelbook, run your lab in an Incognito window.

Qwiklabs Basics

Features and components

Regardless of the topic or skill level targeted, all Qwiklabs have the same interface. This lab you're currently participating in should look similar to the following:

Note : You will not follow the "Creating a Virtual Machine" lab shown in the image. This lab is only used as an example to demonstrate some common features in Qwiklabs.

Read the following lab component definitions, then search in the interface.

Start Lab (button)

Once this button is clicked, the system creates a temporary Google Cloud environment, with all necessary services and credentials active, so you can practice right away with the lab materials. Clicking this button will also start the countdown.

Credit

Lab prices. 1 Credit is usually equivalent to 1 US dollar (discounts available for bulk credit purchases). Some introductory-level labs (like this one) can be followed for free. More specialized labs are more expensive because they involve more demanding computing tasks and require more Google Cloud resources.

Time

Indicates the amount of time you have to complete the lab. Once the Start Lab button is clicked, the timer will activate a countdown until it reaches 00:00:00. Once the timer stops, your temporary Google Cloud environment and resources will be deleted. You'll be given enough time to complete the lab, but don't do anything else while the lab is running: you risk losing all your hard work!

Score

Many labs include scores. This feature is called "activity tracking" and ensures that you complete all the steps defined for a lab. To pass in a lab that includes activity tracking, you must complete all steps in order . Only in this way will you receive a settlement credit.

Buying a lab

Some labs are available for free, but others are paid. For paid labs, if you click the Start Lab button, you'll see a dialog showing the option to launch the lab with an access code or credit. If you don't have an access code or credit, click Buy credit and follow the instructions.

Read and follow instructions

This browser tab contains lab instructions. When you start a lab, that lab environment—in this case the Google Cloud Console user interface—opens in a new browser tab. You'll need to switch between the two browser tabs to read the instructions and then do the job. Depending on the physical computer setup, you can also move these two tabs to two separate monitors.
